A helicopter-borne magnetic and radiometric geophysical survey is being conducted in the Central Highlands and Papuan Peninsula areas of PNG. The survey commenced in March 2006, beginning in the Central Highlands area. The entire program, comprising over 90,000 sq km of coverage, is expected to be completed late in 2008.

The survey is being conducted under contract by Fugro Limited, using 2 Eurocopter AS 350 B3 helicopters . Each is equipped with a Cs total field magnetometer and 256 channel radiometric systems with 32 litres NaI crystal volume.

Magnetic data from the 62,000 sq km block comprising Area 1 (see attached figure) and acquired during 2006 and 2007 have now been processed and are to be released within the next two months. This data set consists of about 148,000 line km flown with north-south lines at 400 & 500m spacing with a terrain clearance of 100m. The survey data is stored in Geosoft database and ASEG_GDFII format on DVD . The DVD will also contain the gridded data in ERMapper format.
