The Geological Survey Division (GSD) is one of the 4 divisions of the Mineral Resources Authority. The division’s general function is to acquire and generate geoscientific data, store it systematically and make it readily available to stakeholders including mining and exploration companies, geoscience researchers and members of the public. The GSD has five main branches and they are
1. Geological Mapping & Exploration Branch,
2. Geophysical Mapping Branch,
3. Geotechnical Mapping & Hydro-geological Branch and the
4. Library.
5. Marketing Information & GIS
Core function of GSD:
- Compile and provide geoscience data and information aimed at encouraging primarily the mineral sector and non-mining sector investment in PNG
- Undertake regional geo-science and geological resource mapping, and compile resulting quality products ready for publication
- Archive statutory reports submitted by mineral tenement holders and be the State repository of all geo-science data.
- Provide sound professional technical advice and services to the State and all other stake holders.
- Acquire and provide good quality geotechnical, geological geophysical and hydro-geological information for all users.
- promotes and disseminate data and information to stakeholders, potential investors and developers of mineral resources; and the public.
The division aims to:
- Become a better and highly productive scientific organization.
- Develop highly skilled professional geoscientists & support staff.
- Develop results-driven work environment with emphasis on the production of high quality data and making such data readily available to clients.
- Through above efforts stimulate mineral exploration activity, with an emphasis on Greenfield areas, and to stimulate geoscience research.
- Focus on attracting new mineral sector investment to PNG by establishing a marketing function incorporating all the functions required to promote prospectivity, deliver products and services to potential investors, and to effectively deal with public relations issues.
